Fall Programming

Fall programming has begun at the Florence County Library System. There are programs and events to be enjoyed by children, teens, and adults alike. Events include movies, storytimes, book discussions, anime clubs, speakings, etc. Peruse the Children, Teen, and Adult Services pages for more information on upcoming events and programs.

SAT Practice Test

The Teen Services Department of the Florence County Library System and Kaplan Testing Center are offering a FREE practice SAT test on September 11, 2010. The test is open to all 9th through 12th graders only. You will learn the format of the test and take the test in a situation similar to a real test day. This is a practice test, not a skills course. Check in will start 8:45 am and the test will begin at 9:00am. It will last to approximately 1:30 pm on that Saturday. The test is around four and a half hours long and will be given in the main meeting room of the Florence County Library. Registration is required by September 7, 2010. Library Awarded Grant for Family Literacy

The Florence County Library System has been awarded a Family Literacy grant titled “Florence Families Read”. This project is made possible by a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the South Carolina State Library.

The $10,216 award will be used to launch Florence Families Reads, a Family Literacy program that targets at risk families. Florence Families Read seeks to promote, cultivate and build lifelong relationships between families and the library. Participants will have an opportunity to use a variety of literacy tools and special programming that will help build literacy skills as a family. This program is part of the Library’s ongoing mission to promote literacy to all citizens of Florence County.

Job Seekers in Olanta

Job Seekers is a new group consisting of those looking for a job and those who want to help these Job Seekers. Those who already have a job but are looking for better opportunities are also welcome. The group will meet once a month, and no work experience is required to attend.

Job Seekers begin on September 21 @ 6:30 p.m., at the Dr. John M. Thomason Public Library in Olanta.

An important reason for meeting with other people is to experience the advantages of networking with others. In addition, at each meeting a key part of the job search will be discussed. Topics will include job search engines, employment applications, cover letters, resumes, interviewing, and library resources.

Meetings will last forty-five minutes to an hour; no registration is required. For more information, please call the Dr. John M. Thomason Public Library in Olanta at (843) 396-4287.

Free Computer Classes at the Library

Free Computer Workshops are offered at the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library in Florence and at the Dr. John M. Thomason Public Library in Olanta. Classes span topics such as the keyboard, the mouse, basic searching on the Internet, and basic skills in using MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Publisher. Each workshop is approximately 90 minutes long and each session is a complete workshop (not part of a series). Registration is required.

Mark Twain’s Study

Drop by the S.C. Room to take a look at the scale model replica of the study in which Mark Twain wrote many of his most famous works. Our display includes actual pictures taken from the time Twain was writing and modern-day pictures of the study in its current location on Elmira College Campus.
