The Dr. N. Lee Morris Gallery announces the winners of the Magic City Survey

The Dr. N. Lee Morris Gallery at the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library congratulates the winners of the 2012 Magic City Survey juried art competition! The event culminated on the evening of December 4 with a visit from guest juror, Mary Whyte—celebrated watercolorist from Charleston, South Carolina. Whyte also presented her new book Down Bohicket Road, which chronicles her time spent with the Gullah women of John’s Island, South Carolina.

First place in the competition was awarded to Anne Baldwin of Darlington with her photograph, “Silver Lining.” In second place was Milton Morris of Olanta with his photograph “M.D. Floyd.” Third Place went to Ann Page of Timmonsville with her woodburning entitled “State Symbols: Wren and Jasmine.” Richard Johnson of Florence’s painting, “Wild Muse” was awarded fourth place. The People’s Choice Award, selected by the public’s votes, was awarded to Rachel Taylor of Florence for her painting, “Helianthus anuus.” Whyte also recognized four other pieces in the competition who were awarded Honorable Mentions: Howard Frye of Florence, “Daydreamers”; William Alexander of Hartsville, “Great Blue Heron with Fish”; Patz Fowle of Hartsville, “Pearl Fryars Fantastic Fro-piary Garden”; and, Lee Benoy of Hartsville, “The Orchard.”

Special thanks are due to this year’s guest juror, Mary Whyte. The Magic City Survey Finalists Exhibition will be on view in the Dr. N. Lee Morris Gallery until January 4, 2013. The Gallery is open during regular library hours.
