  • Florence Library Hosts Virtual Poetry Celebration

    Description:

    The Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library observes National Poetry Month with a month long virtual poetry celebration during the month of April 2021. National Poetry Month was established by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, the goal is to increase the visibility of the poetic form.

    We are accepting submittals now. Poets, aged 18 years or older, can submit a video of themselves reading the poem of their choice. In the video, include an introduction about yourself – your name and where you are from - a bit about why you selected the poem you chose, as well as the name and the author of the poem, original works are also accepted. Foul language or obscene gestures are not permitted and proper clothing is required.

    Your video should be saved in MP4 format and can then be shared with us using some form of online storage platform, such as Google Drive or Dropbox. Or you can upload your video to YouTube and send the URL to us so that it can be added to the lineup of poems featured. Submit videos or URLs to poetry@florencelibrary.org.Received videos will be shared on our webpage and Facebook page, during the month of April.

    Description:

    The Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library continues spotlighting community profiles by showcasing Doctor Charlie Dorn Smith, III. This virtual program is available to watch on the Library website or Facebookpage.  Dr. Smith is interviewed by Information Services Manager, Deborah Bartell.

    Dr. Smith is a native of Tuberville, South Carolina. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Wofford College and his medical degree from the University of South Carolina in 1985. He completed his degree in Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery from the Medical College of Georgia.  Dr. Smith is Board Certified with the American Board of Surgery in general and cardiovascular surgery and is a practicing surgeon at MUSC in Florence.  Dr. Smith is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina. He is also Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Belle W. Baruch Foundation, which works to preserve the ecosystem and beauty of some of South Carolina’s wetlands.  Dr. Smith is married to Deborah Watford and they have three grown children.

    Dr. Smith will be talking about how to have a healthy heart, some symptoms of heart problems, signs of a heart attack, as well as preventative steps such as diet and exercise.

Baruch Foundation, which works to preserve the ecosystem and beauty of some of South Carolina’s wetlands.  Dr. Smith is married to Deborah Watford and they have three grown children.

  • Adult Book Club: Memorial Drive by Natasha Trethewey

    Description:

    Memorial Drive by Natasha Trethewey, a Pulitzer Prize winning, two-term poet laureate, is an autobiographical account about the murder of Trethewey’s 40year old mother, Gwendolyn, by Gwendolyn’s second husband, a troubled Vietnam veteran.  

    Book Club is held monthly on the third Thursday at 1:00 p.m. virtually using the Zoom application. The Library welcomes new participants to join in the lively book discussions.
