FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA – NOVEMBER 1, 2018 – Stephen Motte, curator of the Florence County Museum, will present “Smith’s House of Violins: the Musical Legacy of a Florence Railroad Family” on Thursday, November 15 at 6:30 pm at the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library. In the program, Motte will detail the life and work of local violin craftsman and railway engineer, Charles Smith. The program is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Born in Alabama in 1909, Charles Dilmus Smith moved to South Carolina as a young man in the 1930's to work as an engineer with the Atlantic Coast Rail Road. Through his lifelong passion and dedication to music, Smith established a successful career in South Carolina as both a musician and a violin craftsman. Smith helped to establish the Florence Symphony Orchestra in 1948, and together with his family, established Smith's House of Violins, which operated for over 50 years in Florence under various names, until Smith's death in 2001.

The Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library is located at 509 S. Dargan Street in Florence. For more information and to register for this program, please call (843) 413-7074, or visit www.florencelibrary.org.
